San Angelo READS! Kicks Off Summer Book Patrol Deliveries
The San Angelo READS! Summer Book Patrol kicked off Tuesday, June 11 with its first deliveries of the summer. SAISD administrators, principals, educators and staff spent the day delivering bags of activities, snacks, balloons and a total of 144 books to 29 students and their 57 siblings.
“Summer book delivery brings joy to those receiving and those giving,” said Dr. Farrah Gomez, SAISD Deputy Superintendent and Chief Academic Officer. ”Students receive a special delivery to their home while fostering a love of reading. It is critical that students stay connected to literature over the summer months when normal school routines are disrupted. SAISD is grateful for our community partners that help make this possible.”
The goal of Summer Book Patrol, an extension of the District’s San Angelo READS! initiative, is to continue inspiring and promoting a love of reading, especially in the critical summer months. The District hopes the deliveries not only encourage our students to continue reading during the summer but also bring a smile to their faces and let them know they are supported and special.
We extend a special thanks to our SAISD Difference Maker team members who took time out of their day to help to deliver for the Summer Book Patrol fun. We extend our appreciation to H-E-B for their partnership with the Summer Book Patrol and their support of literacy in the San Angelo community.

San Angelo READS!
The San Angelo READS! community-wide literacy initiative was founded by the District in 2020 to promote and encourage reading and the SAISD future-ready learner profile attributes among SAISD students and the greater San Angelo community. The goal of the literacy initiative is to increase awareness of the importance of literacy and to inspire a love for reading. This exciting initiative is driven by statistics which show how vitally important literacy is to providing all students with the opportunities to succeed at a young age. Children and teenagers who read for pleasure on a daily or weekly basis score better on reading and writing tests than infrequent or non-readers.
SAISD kicked off San Angelo READS! on December 9, 2020 with the inaugural San Angelo Reads! Day, a day when literacy was celebrated at every SAISD elementary campus with literacy fun like read-ins, unveiling book vending machines and a gift of a book to all SAISD third-graders compliments of the San Angelo Area Foundation. Inside and outside our classrooms, SAISD is committed to building literacy skills which create students who are prepared for future success, thus building a better tomorrow for our students and community.
