Atmos Energy and San Angelo READS! Celebrate First-Grade Book Giveaway

Atmos Energy, San Angelo READS! and first-grade students at Holiman Elementary School celebrated literacy and the love of reading with a book giveaway and a read-aloud of "I Hate to Be Sick” by Aamir Lee Bermiss. Last month, every first-grade student in San Angelo ISD received a copy of the book, generously provided by Atmos Energy.

“I Hate to Be Sick" tells the story of a young boy who wakes up feeling miserable with a cold, frustrated by missing school, writing and playtime. His father comforts him with warm soup and a shared storybook, helping him feel better. Through rest, nourishment, and his father’s care, the boy learns that being sick, while unpleasant, is easier to bear with love and attention, and he looks forward to recovering soon.

In celebration of the book giveaway, Molly Turk, Atmos Energy's public affairs manager, read the book to first graders in Holiman’s library.

“Atmos Energy has a program called Fueling Safe and Thriving Communities," Mrs. Turk said. “An important pillar for us within the communities that we serve is promoting children’s literacy. It was really an honor for us to be able to provide these books to all of our first graders … this is just a small piece we can play in ensuring that our kids are successful.”

Turk also emphasized the importance of family reading time. “Atmos Energy is excited to provide these books to families because it’s important for families to read together at home,” she said. “Whether that’s a parent reading to their child, reading together through the book, or the student reading it to their parents, just to ensure that we’re having that time together as a family, but also that literacy continues to be important.”

We would like to thank our friends and supporters of public education Atmos Energy for their generous gift of books for our first graders. About San Angelo READS!

The San Angelo READS! community-wide literacy initiative was founded by the District in 2020 to promote and encourage reading and the SAISD future-ready learner profile attributes among SAISD students and the greater San Angelo community. The goal of the literacy initiative is to increase awareness of the importance of literacy and to inspire a love for reading. This exciting initiative is driven by statistics which show how vitally important literacy is in providing all students with the opportunities to succeed at a young age. Children and teenagers who read for pleasure on a daily or weekly basis score better on reading and writing tests than infrequent or non-readers.

SAISD kicked off San Angelo READS! on December 9, 2020 with the inaugural San Angelo Reads! Day, a day when literacy was celebrated at every SAISD elementary campus with literacy fun like read-ins, unveiling book vending machines and a gift of a book to all SAISD third-graders compliments of the San Angelo Area Foundation. Inside and outside our classrooms, SAISD is committed to building literacy skills which create students who are prepared for future success, thus building a better tomorrow for our students and community.
