A colorful red, yellow and blue wallpaper of photographs showcases Fort Concho Elementary students dressed imaginatively as their future selves: One child sports a white lab coat and a microscope, another clutches a microphone confidently standing before a performing arts center to rival Carnegie Hall, while another proudly wears a shiny police badge while holding the keys to a patrol car in the background. This special wall tells a story both of the school and individual students, each photograph complete with bold white letters stating the students’ chosen future aspirations, which range from “Future Chef” to “Future Geologist” to “Future Computer Programmer” to “Future Military Officer” to “Future Actor” and everything in between. Due to staffing considerations, including allocation of limited substitutes, and the health and wellness of our community, San Angelo ISD will temporarily close our high school campuses (Central High School, Central High School on Oakes, Lake View High School, PAYS, and Carver) for instruction this Friday, January 14, 2022. Classes will resume in-person on Tuesday, January 18th. High school teachers and staff will continue to report to campuses for work and be available to support students through online support.
San Angelo ISD proudly celebrates our Board Trustee Ami Mizell-Flint for her selection by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) for the Leadership TASB class of 2022, a year-long education leadership study program. Class members are selected for demonstrated leadership in their local district and communities, and for their representation of the diversity of Texas school districts. Mrs. Mizell-Flint is now in her 10th year of servant leadership on the SAISD School Board. As part of the TASB leadership program, throughout the year she will join 35 other school board members from across Texas in working toward earning Master Trustee status - the highest designation recognized by TASB.
The San Angelo Schools Foundation awarded over $76,500 in grants to San Angelo ISD educators and campuses as part of their Grants to Teachers program in November 2021, and the Foundation members were formally recognized for their hard work, commitment and generosity at the December SAISD School Board Meeting. The San Angelo Schools Foundation was established in 1989 with the goal to support innovative academic opportunities for children of San Angelo ISD. Each year, the Schools Foundation focuses efforts on their two major projects: Grants to Teachers and Scholarships to Students.
The Grants to Teachers program works to support SAISD educators by providing classroom grants and all-campus grants with the hope of enriching the education of SAISD students. The Schools Foundation began awarding teacher grants in 1989, and as of this November has now awarded a total of over $723,000 since its inception. This school year, the Schools Foundation awarded 64 grants to 98 teachers as well as 7 All-Campus grants impacting 24 campuses.
A traditional toss of shiny blue graduation caps with white and orange tassels culminates the special occasion for students forging a non-traditional path to achieving their hopes and dreams. In this week’s Future Ready Friday feature, we celebrate our Fall Class of 2021 PAYS graduates from Central and Lake View High School who persevere through unique circumstances as they close one chapter and step onward to their futures.
Yesterday evening on December 16, 2021, 46 PAYS graduates with 46 different stories of determination, resilience and perseverance walked across the graduation stage at the McNease Convention Center and received their diplomas. PAYS is an alternative campus for students motivated to complete their high school diploma but looking for a different approach, sometimes due to needing to overcome certain obstacles or to take advantage of opportunities that can vary from situations impacting their home environment to a student motivated to be highly active in the workforce and other scenarios.
